If you want to plan something for Halloween then ghosting effect on your image would look exciting, natural and very approripate. In this tutorial you will learn how to ghost an image in Photoshop.
Steps to ghost an image in Photoshop
1. First of all, open Adobe Photoshop. We are using Adobe Photoshop CS5.5 but this also works on earlier or later versions.
2. Next, Open the image where you want to apply ghost effect. To do that, click on the File >> Open and select the file you want to open. Then click on the Open button.
3. Next, open Layers panel by pressing F7 and in the Layers panel, right click the layer and choose ‘Convert to smart object’. This will convert the layer to a smart object. The filter we are going to use will be applied as Smart Filter.
4. Next, from the menu bar, choose Filter > Blur > Motion Blur and set the Angle = 0o and Distance = 500 pixels. This will blur your image a bit.
5. If you check at Layers panel, there you will see Background layer is converted into a Smart Object. And the Motion Blur filter was added as a Smart Filter. If you want to make changes then you can double click Motion Blur shown below background layer.
6. Next, in the Layers panel, click on the Smart Filters to select it. If you click it then a white highlight border will be shown confirming that it’s been selected. Then from the toolbox, select Brush tool. Set Color To Black. Also, from the option bar, set Opacity = 25%. Lowering opacity will reveal original image gradually. Then paint on the blurred image. This will reveal the painted portion of the image. If you want to hide it again, then paint with white color.
7. As we have already applied Motion Blur Filter, now if we add another filter, then a problem can arise so we need to convert the image to another smart object. To do that, with Smart Object selected in the Layers panel, click on the top right color and select Convert to Smart Object.
8. Next, from the menu bar, select Filter > Distort > Diffuse Glow. This will add a glow effect to the image with our current Background color. Set Graininess = 6, Glow Amount = 10, Clear Amount = 10. Graininess will give the grain effect whereas Glow Amount controls the intensity of the glow and Clear Amount is opposite to Glow Amount. Finally click on the OK button.
9. Next, add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer. To do that, from the menu bar select Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation and click OK. Set Hue = 180, Saturation = 25 and Lightness = 0.
